It was one of the largest travelling circuses in Europe and older Bristol residents remembered the days the circus train would arrived at nearby Clifton Downs station, with animals and performers parading up to the site. But by the late 60s tastes were changing with increasing opposition to the use of wild animals in entertainment. After Billy Smart died in 1966 the touring business survived for only another five years, closing in 1971. Younger relatives revived a smaller touring version in the 1990s.
