Thisis a region of the eastern Himalayas, in China, north-east of Bhutan. The landscape consists ofsoaring mountains, with snow-capped peaks andvegetation on the lower slopes. Major rivers runthrough the valleys, fed by glacial meltwater. Thebarren areas (light blue) are where sediment hasbeen deposited by the rivers. The area shown inthis image is around 60 kilometres wide. The imagedata includes infrared wavelengths, and wasobtained on 17 February 2002, using the ASTERsensor on the Terra satellite.
