A memorial shows the faces of East Berliners killed at the Berlin Wall is located on Bernauer Strasse. The wall on Bernauer Strasse literally cut apartment buildings in two and was where many of the most memorable scenes of escape played out. Between 1961 and 1989 at least 139 people died as a direct result of the East German border fortifications. Of those killed, the vast majority were young men in their teens and 20's.
