GERMANS HANG SOVIET CIVILIANS. Five Russians await hanging near the town of Velizh in the Smolensk region of NW Russia in September 1941. German soldiers await the order to tip over the makeshift platform while the next group to be executed stand behind blindfolded. In September 1942 German occupation forces murdered all but 17 of the town's 1440 Jewish population.
