More information:

The village of Mesilla became part of the United States after The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo brought an official end to the Mexican American War. However, some residents, unhappy with the change, relocated the village south of the new border. After the Gadsden Purchase established the Rio Grande River as the US southern border, Mesilla became a permanent part of the United States.
